SULB Closings for Indoor Gunshot Detection System Testing

July 26, 2024
Front entrance: Student Union and Library Building (SULB)

Campus members, we hope you are doing well and enjoying your summer holiday. We want to inform you about upcoming testing of the Indoor Gunshot Detection System at the Student Union and Library Building (SULB).

Dates

  • Monday: July 29
  • Tuesday: July 30
  • Wednesday: July 31
  • Thursday: August 1
  • Friday August 2

Time for testing each day: 4:40 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST.

During this five-day evaluation period, we will be conducting gun-related scientific tests using blank ammunition to evaluate the AI-driven gunshot detection systems. As safety is our utmost priority, we aim to ensure that the detection system performs accurately to improve the security of our campus. Dr. Wei Dai, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, along with his research team, will be collecting experimental data to assess two patent-pending technologies. The research project is funded by the Indiana Space Grant Consortium (NASA-supported) and PNW.

To ensure the safety of everyone present, we need to temporarily close the Student Union and Library Building (SULB) during each test period. Therefore, we kindly request all faculty, students, and staff vacate the building between 4:40 and 5:30 p.m. CST from July 29 to August 2, 2024.

We understand that this temporary closure may cause some inconvenience. However, it is essential for the safe assessment of the indoor Gunshot Detection System.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making PNW a safer place for all.
