PNW defines first-generation college students as those whose parents or guardians have not completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree.

You would still be considered a first-generation college student even if your siblings obtained their bachelor’s degree before you!

Approximately 56% of students at PNW have self-identified as first-generation. PNW is committed to supporting you and building community among over half of our student population.

Additional First-Gen Information

First-generation day is November 8. At PNW, we plan a weeklong celebration to recognize the strong community of first gen identity and excellence.

This date honors the anniversary of the passing of the Higher Education Act of 1965, intended to help build equity opportunities for students to succeed in higher education.

First Scholars is a program from the Center for First-Generation Student Success that helps colleges and universities improve the experience of first-generation students. PNW received this designation in 2022 and has been making strides to prepare our institution to better serve our first-generation college students.
