Solar Eclipse and Academic Scheduling
Dear Colleagues,
The solar eclipse is less than three weeks away (Monday, Apr. 8, 2024). In and around Hammond and Westville, it will be about 95% total. The path of totality runs southwest to northeast through Indiana. You can go the National Solar Observatory site, which gives percent totality and eclipse start and stop times.
Given the rare and astronomically wonderful nature of the event, instructors can cancel classes as appropriate to allow students to travel to witness the total solar eclipse. The Department of Chemistry and Physics has a limited number of solar viewing glasses available.
Student Life is hosting an on-campus event for those wanting to see the partial solar eclipse, and they will also have glasses available.
Thanks and best wishes.
