Faculty Success

Pat Obi, The White Lodging Endowed Professor of Finance and Director of the Executive MBA Program, traveled to the Lithuania Business University of Applied Sciences during an EU-sponsored trip in October 2021. His activities included two research presentations on the impact of the pandemic on global financial markets and a comparison of financial performance between US and EU banks since Basel III. The latter will be published in the Journal of Management. I also gave daily presentations on managerial finance for students from the EU, US, and Canada under the Erasmus+ program and Teaching Excellence Workshops for professors from various Lithuanian universities.

Student Engagement in the New Normal: The Role of Brightspace

Student engagement is a topic of great importance in the discussion of pedagogical development in higher education, especially in the post-COVID landscape of teaching and learning. The PNW project proposes a multi-dimensional and multi-method examination of the role of Brightspace in engaging students across different disciplines in the post-COVID era. The objective is to investigate the application of Brightspace in various teaching modalities, including face-to-face instruction, hybrid, virtual instruction, and distance learning, as a primary instructional instrument in the new normal, in promoting student engagement through innovations in instruction and assessment.

J.T. Eagan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Accounting, and co-authors Dr. Christine Cheng – University of Mississippi and Dr. Amy Yurko – Duquesne University won the American Taxation Association, ATA, Teaching Innovation Award for their case study ChicagoLand Popcorn® – Examining Online Retailer Nexus Following Wayfair Using Data Visualization and Robotics Process Automation.

He will also be a panelist during the ATA Virtual Midyear Meeting on the session Incorporating Current Events and New Legislation into the Classroom.

Shontrai Irving, a practicing attorney, has partnered with the Lake County Bar Association and the Kimbrough Bar Association to create a mentorship program for PNW students. “Mentors have always made a huge difference in my professional life,” states Irving, “and I want to provide my students with that same experience.”

Matching students with legal professionals as mentors serves a dual purpose, according to Irving. While students will benefit from having an advocate from which to seek practical advice, encouragement and support, the mentors will gain a new perspective and a sense of fulfillment and personal growth.

Fellows were selected based on their proposed project, assessments and anticipated impact and will work with a panel of senior faculty mentors to develop goals, document and evaluate their project’s impact and complete a scholarly work.

Congratulations to Professor Sontrai Irving on being selected to participate in the Office of Engagement’s 2020-2021 Scholarship of Engagement Fellows Program! The purpose of this program is to foster the development of the scholarship of engagement for faculty throughout the Purdue system. As a fellow, Shontrai will work on his engagement project that focuses on lawyers serving as mentors to students at Purdue University Northwest. There will be a special emphasis as well on connecting lawyers with groups that are underrepresented in college. The end goal of this project will be to write a scholarly article that gives an overview of the program and the mutual benefits to the lawyers and students; as well as the local community. Hopefully, this program will serve as a model to other institutions to see their legal community as a partner in helping their students achieve and persist. Moreover, this program will serve as an agent of change in connecting people in the community with their legal system in positive and meaningful ways.

Professor Shontrai Irving was awarded the Bicentennial Medal from Indiana University. The Bicentennial Medal is awarded to organizations and individuals who, through their personal, professional, artistic, or philanthropic efforts, have broadened the reach of Indiana University around the state, nation, and world. The medals themselves are unique, made from materials salvaged from the old bells which hung in the Student Building on the IU Bloomington campus, giving recipients a lasting piece of IU history. The Bicentennial Medal honors distinguished and distinctive service, broadly defined, in support of Indiana University’s mission as a public university, individuals who have enlarged the footprint of IU, or have helped to put IU on the map in unique ways. Those receiving the Bicentennial Medal should be seen as models for future students, faculty, alumni, and organizations to emulate as IU enters its Third Century.

Professor J.T. Eagan delivered a technical topic presentation he developed, Unclaimed Property for Municipalities, to the 16-Plus Meeting. The 16-Plus group has representatives from area municipalities; there were over a dozen in attendance.

Treasurer for the Town of Munster complimented the quality and impact of his presentation and thought “Purdue is lucky to have Professor Eagan on staff”.
