PNW’s celebration kicks off Nov. 4 with a guest presentation from Angelica Carrington, an educator and consultant specializing in inclusivity and identity affirmation. Carrington will present “Latino, Latine, Latinx,” a workshop that explores the origins and nuances of “Latino/a/x/e” and “Hispanic” identities and connections to Chicano and indigenous cultures. Carrington’s talk will occur in room 153 of PNW’s Classroom Office Building.
The PNW campus community and public are invited on Nov. 19 to view a hoop dancer performance from Scott Sixkiller Sinquah from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall on PNW’s Hammond campus, 2200 169th Street, Hammond, Ind. Scott represents the Gila River Pima, Hopi/Tewa, Cherokee and Choctaw Nations. He has danced since age two and has performed across the U.S., Canada and Europe. He is a two-time world champion hooper dancer.
Business leaders from Hobart-based Broken Wagon Bison farm will visit PNW’s Hammond campus on Nov. 14 between noon and 1 p.m. and deliver a presentation on how bison were central to Native Americans’ livelihoods. Several Native American artifacts will also be displayed during the presentation and bison jerk will be available for sampling. The event will take place in room 153 of PNW’s Classroom Office Building.
PNW’s Native American Heritage Month is a celebration organized by the university’s Cultural Heritage Celebration Committee in collaboration with various campus departments and units. The committee coordinates celebrations with PNW campus community members and our surrounding communities to recognize the diverse ethnicities and backgrounds of our collective community members and support an inclusive and welcoming environment.
