We are proud to announce that one of our faculty members has recently completed the first issue of our philosophy student magazine. During the 2019 fall semester, Dr. Deepa Majumdar, Professor of Philosophy for Purdue Northwest, produced and edited a magazine featuring various works written by philosophy students here at PNW.

The magazine, Symphony of Reason, was released earlier this semester and contains a dozen student-produced projects.

Symphony of Reason’s  Content

Dr. Majumdar served as the editor of Symphony of Reason and worked hard to include student-produced works. Symphony of Reason includes essay work, student papers, a book review, translation, poetry, and experiential papers where “students imagine themselves as the released prisoner” in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.

Student contributors include Kacey C. Cummins, Kaylee F. Hemphill, Daizha M. Hunter, Martina S. James, Kevin A. Kliver, Nicole E. Miller, Lucas J. Mulloy, Joshua J. Niewiadomski, Christian A. Schubert, Garrett A. Varner, and Kayla M. Vasilko. Dr. David Detmer, also a Professor of Philosophy for Purdue Northwest, served as co-editor of the publication.

Of her motivations in producing this magazine, Dr. Majumdar said, “Symphony of Reason was purely inspired! The idea about this magazine came to me in March 2019. I shared this idea with my philosophy colleagues, who were supportive. The title of this magazine came to me suddenly during a bus trip from Westville to Hammond. After that, everything fell into place. During Fall 2019, I had the privilege of editing the first issue of this magazine.”

Where to Read Symphony of Reason

Symphony of Reason is available for direct download on the Department of History & Philosophy’s website and a hardcopy can be acquired in CLO 215, on the Hammond Campus. Dr. Majumdar wants to ensure that this magazine provides an outlet for students to showcase their work. We look forward to the second issue and are eager to see what Dr. Majumdar has planned.
