Dear Colleagues,

I was pleased to recently publish a column with The Times of Northwest Indiana for its annual Progress special editions, which detail the climate and opportunities for business and nonprofit sectors in our region. While our core mission at Purdue University Northwest (PNW) remains providing an outstanding education to students, we also play a crucial role in connecting leaders, technology and opportunity to advance regional development.

One of the most promising developments in our region’s economic landscape is the establishment of the Roberts Impact Lab (RIL) at Purdue University Northwest in downtown Hammond. This technology transfer and commercialization hub will connect regional research, business, and workforce development to the rapidly growing quantum and advanced manufacturing industries. Linkages through the Bloch Tech Hub, Chicago Quantum Exchange and Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park will enable regional businesses and entrepreneurs to engage with national and international quantum innovation efforts.

The Roberts Impact Lab will offer a unique blend of business incubation, workforce training, and commercialization resources. The lab will also actively engage researchers, startups, and industry leaders in technology and business to bridge the gap between academic discovery and market application. Renovations of the 44,000-square-foot building will begin this spring, with many areas operational by fall 2025.

PNW continues to respond to regional workforce needs in other ways as well. Our career-enhancing academics build the foundation for individuals’ future success while meeting area companies’ needs for a workforce increasingly skilled in the latest technological advancements. Our faculty, staff and students are bringing millions of dollars annually in sponsored research that surpasses other mid-size or regional institutions in the state. As the only doctoral-granting institution in Northwest Indiana, PNW is preparing future leaders to advance to the highest levels of professional and academic achievement.

Working collaboratively to expand the Northwest Indiana economy, encourage innovation, and strengthen our communities is the best way we can have a transformative impact on the region.

Sincerely,

Kenneth C. Holford, Ph.D.
