Phi Alpha Theta to Induct New Members
Phi Alpha Theta, the honor society for undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in History, will be welcoming new members this semester. While the traditional induction ceremony has been canceled due to the safety precautions in place as a result of COVID-19, we would still like to acknowledge this year’s inductees and explain what Phi Alpha Theta is.

Phi Alpha Theta’s History
The first chapter for Phi Alpha Theta was introduced at the University of Arkansas in 1921. Since then, it has grown to include more than 400,000 members in 970 chapters nationwide. Purdue Northwest’s own Phi Alpha Theta chapter was founded on the Hammond campus in 1990.
Undergraduate students inducted into the honor society must meet the requirements of an overall GPA of 3.0, with a minimum GPA of 3.1 in at least 12 credit hours of history courses. Graduate students need to have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours towards their master’s degree in History with at least a 3.5 GPA.
Admission to the honor society is also open to non-history majors as long as they meet the requirements. Faculty are also eligible for membership, and are encouraged to join.
Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is a great way to enhance resumes and grow professional networks. Previous inductees have gone on to become professional historians, writers, and university faculty.
