Introduction

Brittney Autry Cole is a professor in the Social Work Program at Purdue University Northwest, where she is dedicated to advancing the field of social work through teaching, research and community engagement. With a Doctorate in Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania, Professor Cole’s expertise encompasses trauma in Black women, holistic healing modalities for Black women and early intervention wellness practices in Black girls.

Research Overview

Professor Cole specializes in the exploration of healing methods among Black women, examining how cultural, social, and historical contexts influence their mental health and well-being. Professor Cole’s research investigates traditional and contemporary healing practices, including the integration of spirituality, community support systems, and culturally affirming therapies.

By focusing on the intersectionality of race, gender, and socioeconomic status, Professor Cole aims to highlight the unique challenges faced by Black women and the resilience they demonstrate in navigating these obstacles. Professor Cole’s work seeks to inform social work practice by developing culturally relevant interventions that promote holistic healing and empower Black women within their communities.

In addition, Professor Cole is committed to collaborative research efforts that amplify the voices of Black women, ensuring that their experiences and insights shape the discourse around mental health and healing in social work.

I was born in Hawaii to two military parents! I love reading and listening to audiobooks! I love traveling and have a goal of visiting every state in the United States and every continent over the next 10 years!

Teaching Focus

Professor Cole teaches a range of social work courses focused on integrating real word experiences to increase positive learning outcomes. Professor Cole is excited to engage students through the integration of a culturally responsive lens and support them in thinking creatively about ways to support the needs of those most vulnerable. Specifically, Professor Cole teaches Introduction to Social Work Practice, Social Work Practice and Trauma within the field of Social Work.

Previous Roles

Previously, Professor Cole served as a Lecturer at the University of Kentucky. Professor Cole has also taught at the University of Washington and Howard University.

Passionate about fostering social justice and empowering vulnerable populations, Professor Cole owns a group practice that focuses on instilling holistic healing modalities in Black women who have experienced racial, sexual and gender discrimination. In addition to teaching and research, Professor Cole is also actively involved in various community initiatives. Professor Cole is committed to mentoring the next generation of social workers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to effect meaningful change in society.
