Recalibrate Your Feminism
March 27 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Have you ever wondered why feminism in the U.S. has sometimes left out the experiences of certain groups like transgender individuals or women of color?
In the 19th century, the fight for women’s right to vote was mainly championed by middle-class, white women. While they made significant strides, they didn’t always consider the struggles faced by women of different backgrounds. We’re still seeing these challenges, like attacks on transgender communities and limitations on reproductive rights.
In the 20th century, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) feminists introduced the concept of intersectionality. This idea recognizes that oppression isn’t just one-dimensional. It’s like layers of a cake – when different forms of oppression intersect, they create unique experiences that need to be addressed together. Understanding intersectionality is crucial for modern-day feminism. It helps us see the bigger picture and ensures that we are fighting for the rights of all women from various backgrounds.
Join us for a discussion led by Amanda Brand, assistant professor of Communication, who will dive into how intersectionality has shaped women’s history and why it is essential for shaping our feminism today. It is a chance to recalibrate our understanding and make feminism more inclusive and powerful.
