National First-Generation College Student Day
Dear Purdue Northwest Community,
Today, November 8, we proudly celebrate National First-Generation College Student Day, honoring the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This landmark legislation expanded access to higher education and established essential support programs that continue to empower first-generation students and historically underrepresented communities on their journeys to college success.
At Purdue Northwest, this day holds special significance. Over half of our student body identifies as First Gen Scholars—a powerful testament to the resilience, ambition and determination of students who are blazing new trails and inspiring others to pursue their educational dreams. Additionally, Purdue Northwest is honored to host six, federally funded TRIO Programs. These programs provide critical resources, guidance and support, ensuring that our first-gen students and others have the tools to excel in college and beyond.
On behalf of the Office for First Gen College Student Initiatives, we extend our gratitude to the community for making this year’s First Gen College Scholar Week impactful and memorable. From the First Gen Celebration Kick-off and the inspiring keynote by Chief Stephanie La Rue, to the moving stories shared by our First Gen community at the Human Library, this year’s events were extraordinary. This success was made possible by the active support and engagement of the entire PNW community—thank you!
Today, let’s take a moment to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our first-gen students, along with the faculty, staff and community members who support them every step of the way. Together, we’re building a campus culture that champions opportunity, belonging and success for all.
Happy National First-Gen Day and thank you for your continued commitment to our First Gen community!
