CIVS Distinguished Speaker Seminar: Sara Hornby, “The Green Steel Revolution”

April 8, 2025 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

You are cordially invited to attend a CIVS Distinguished Speaker Seminar, “The Green Steel Revolution” delivered by Sara A. Hornby, Ph.D.

on Tuesday April 8th in the CIVS Theater (Powers 123) at 11:00am. Dr. Hornby is the recipient of the 2024 AIST John F. Elliot Lecture Award and has outstanding experience in steelmaking optimization. Please encourage your colleagues, students, or friends to attend this great opportunity. Refreshments will be served at a reception following the lecture.

The green steel revolution aims to reduce the steel industry’s carbon emissions, which contribute 7-9% of global CO2e emissions. The key solution involves shifting from the high-emission blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF/BOF) to hydrogen direct reduced iron (H2 DRI) using electric arc furnaces (EAF). This transition, while technically feasible, presents challenges, but new technologies with high technology readiness levels (TRL 3-7) are emerging. The green steel revolution offers exciting career opportunities for innovative solutions in sustainable steelmaking.
