First Latina U.S. Surgeon General shares her story during PNW’s Hispanic Heritage Month
Dr. Antonia Novello, the 14th U.S. Surgeon General and the first woman and Latina to hold the position, visited Purdue University Northwest (PNW) in September as a part of the universities Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
Dr. Novello delivered an empowering talk inside Alumni Hall to an audience that included approximately 400 visiting high school students from school districts in Illinois and Indiana. Dr. Novello encouraged Latino students to feel proud of their heritage and to be ready to address systemic barriers that have impacted Latino populations’ socioeconomic and health care outcomes.
