SUBJECT: Purdue University Northwest designation as a Metropolitan University

WHEREAS: Purdue University Calumet and Purdue North Central came together in 2016 to establish Purdue University Northwest as a new and dynamic university for the region and the state; and

WHEREAS: Purdue University Calumet and Purdue North Central were both designated by the State of Indiana as Regional Universities, a status which now also defines Purdue University Northwest; and

WHEREAS: The mission of the Regional Universities remains an essential component of higher education in the United States, the new Purdue University Northwest more closely aligns with the important mission of comprehensive Metropolitan Universities; and

WHEREAS: As a Metropolitan University, Purdue Northwest will continue to serve the students who were instrumental in building Purdue Calumet and Purdue North Central but would deepen and broaden its trajectory and intentional engagement as a leading regional institution with dynamic and growing associations and partnerships with business, government, education,health care, non-profit and community organizations; and

WHEREAS: The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has established Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) as Metropolitan Universities, with total enrollments of 30,000 and 12,000, respectively; and

WHEREAS: Purdue University Northwest has a total enrollment of 15,000; be it therefore

RESOLVED: That President Daniels recommend to the Board of Trustees and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education that Purdue University Northwest be designated as a Metropolitan University.
