Free Speech, Civility and Cancel Culture
September 24, 2020 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Please join the department of history and philosophy for a Philosophy Matters Event:
Free Speech, Civility and Cancel Culture presented by David Detmer, Ph.D.
On July 7, 2020, Harper’s magazine published “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate,” signed by 153 public figures. The letter claims that we are witnessing an increasing “intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism and [a] tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.”
But the letter has also received a good deal of criticism, with the resulting discussion exposing deep disagreements about the nature and value of free speech and of civility, as well as about the state of affairs with respect to these values in contemporary America.
In this Philosophy Matters event, PNW professor of philosophy David Detmer will offer an analysis of these issues and invite the audience to participate in a discussion of them.
This event is free and open to the public.
