Chancellor Emeritus James Yackel served as chancellor of Purdue University Calumet from 1990-2001

With sincere condolences, we share news of the passing of Chancellor Emeritus James Yackel.

Dr. Yackel served as chancellor of Purdue University Calumet from 1990-2001. He led the university during a time of increase in many areas: enrollment, student scholarship dollars, new undergraduate and graduate degrees, partnership activity with business and industry, and off-campus access opportunities to higher education.

During his tenure, the Classroom Office Building (CLO) and the buildings that now house the Center for Healthy Living and the Counseling Center for students, and the White Lodging Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management, were constructed. Founders Plaza in the center of the Hammond campus also was developed.

Dr. Yackel, a professor of mathematical sciences, joined the Purdue Calumet staff in 1987 after 21 years on the Purdue West Lafayette faculty. He served as vice chancellor for Academic Affairs prior to being named Chancellor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Erna B. Yackel, a professor emerita of Mathematics Education.

Dr. Yackel’s family has shared that a visitation and service will be held Monday, February 17, beginning at 10 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Avenue, Munster, Ind.

Sincerely,

Kenneth C. Holford, Ph.D.
Chancellor
