CIVS EAF Research Work Published in Two Top Journals
Two top journals, Applied Thermal Engineering (ATE) and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B (MMTB), published two research papers entitled “Effect of the coherent jet burner on scrap melting in electric arc furnace” and “Simulation of Scrap Melting Process in an AC Electric Arc Furnace: CFD Model Development and Experimental Validation” authored by Yuchao Chen. Yuchao is a research assistant in CIVS who recently received his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in fluid mechanics and heat transfer from Purdue University West Lafayette.

CIVS is hiring Research Assistants-Simulation!
Specific responsibilities include conducting literature research relevant to the assigned project topic area, defining and running simulations using commercial simulation software, post-processing simulation results, and analyzing those results to make determinations for process improvements or establish new simulations to help answer key research questions

NSF RET Teachers Visit U. S. Steel Gary Works
On June 30, 2022, eight high school teachers from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program visited the U.S. Steel Gary plant, accompanied by CIVS Senior Research Scientist Jack Moreland.
