CIVS Researchers Visit Charter Steel for Safety Training Simulator

July 8, 2022

CIVS Staff and students visited Charter Steel, one of the fifteen members of the Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium (SMSVC), in Saukville, WI on July 1st, 2022. John Moreland, Senior Research Scientist, Kyle Toth, Senior Research Engineer, and Rayhan Zaman, CIVS student, were welcomed by Matt Liddick, Smart Manufacturing Automation Engineer, Henry Mitchel, Hot Metal Crane Operator, and Audrey Smolinski, Project Engineer- Smart Manufacturing.

The purpose of the visit to Charter Steel was to capture reference photos and video and discuss details for developing a crane operator VR simulator that is being developed through the SMSVC Safety Committee. The simulator aims to create realistic training scenarios for crane operators to practice operating a crane for a variety of tasks.

The CIVS team interacted with multiple crane operators and observed a wide range of activities that will help to create realistic training scenarios. The team also discussed simulator details with key personnel on-site and discussed new techniques that will be used to create realistic virtual environments for the project.
