Dr. Chenn Zhou was recently invited to give three talks: 1) “Digitalization and Decarbonization for Steel Industry” at the AIST Energy and Utilities Workshop: Roadmap to the Energy Efficient, Sustainable and Decarbonized Steel Industry at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from March 14-17; 2) “Digitalization for Advanced Manufacturing through Simulation, Visualization and Machine Learning: at REWAS 2022 (REcycling and WASte symposium) collocated with TMS 2022 in Anaheim, California on February 27–March 3; and 3) “Digitalization and Innovation for Steel Industry” at the SSAB Americas Strategy Summit in Rosemont, Illinois, on February 28 – March 1, 2022.

In these invited talks, Dr. Zhou presented the essential roles of computer simulation, AR/VR visualization, data analytics, and machine learning in digitalization for Industry 4.0 or smart steel manufacturing, as well as decarbonization, including hydrogen utilization. She emphasized the importance of integrating advanced digital technologies with smart sensors to develop and implement physics-based and data-driven models and platforms for online and offline monitoring, predictions, optimization, troubleshooting, and maintenance of manufacturing processes, as well as for virtual training for safety and workforce development.  Integration methodologies and project examples were also demonstrated.

REWAS, a sustainability driven conference within The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), has a long history of bringing together academia and industry to exchange and reflect on the latest technology developments in process optimization and waste management fields. REWAS 2022 is the seventh installment of a unique, transdisciplinary conference focused on recycling and sustainability. It provides the opportunity to showcase research and advances on strategies and processes enabling the development of tomorrow’s technical cycles.

The AIST Energy and Utilities Workshop is a joint effort between the AIST Energy & Utilities Technology Committee, U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Initiative and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s ENERGY STAR program. Its objective is to educate attendees on the key aspects of energy efficiency of important energy support systems and equipment, as well as decarbonization strategies and technologies in the steel production process.

SSAB is a Nordic and US-based steel company. SSAB offers value-added products and services developed in close cooperation with its customers to create a stronger, lighter, and more sustainable world. SSAB has production facilities in Sweden, Finland, and the US. The Strategy Summit was organized for 50 SSAB Americas managers.
