CIVS Director and students had the opportunity to showcase CIVS’ research achievements in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics at the 7th annual ArcelorMittal Global R&D CFD & Thermo-Mechanics Days. This virtual event took place between February 22nd and February 25th, 2022, with the goal of sharing information about iron and steelmaking research with expert research colleagues across the world, from Canada, Brazil, Belgium, France, and more.

On February 25th, Dr. Chenn Zhou was invited to give a keynote presentation titled “Smart Steel Manufacturing through Simulation, Visualization, & Machine Learning,” discussing the advances and applications of CIVS research to iron and steelmaking at both ArcelorMittal and other companies’ facilities. CIVS Ph.D. student Yuchao Chen presented his research on the electric arc furnace process entitled “Integrated CFD Model for the EAF”, CIVS Ph.D. student Xipeng Guo presented recent work on the steelmaking refining ladle process entitled “Modeling of Steel Quality in the Refining Ladle,” and Chukwunedum Uzor, CIVS Masters student, delivered a presentation entitled “Carbon Intensity Reduction in Industrial Furnaces.”

CIVS appearance at the event scored high marks. Session chair and organizer, Dr. Sartim from ArcelorMittal, stated that, for many years, CIVS has produced high-quality work and has set and maintained the highest standards in research and presentation. All three students that participated in the competition received awards. Yuchao Chen was awarded the “Best Student Presentation” Award, while Xipeng Guo and Chukwunedum Uzor each received a “Recognition for Excellence” for their important contributions to the event.
