Students Network at the AIST Dinner Meeting
On October 12, 2021, 19 students and faculty from CIVS and Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) Department attended the Midwest AIST chapter dinner held at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville, Indiana. There were over 600 attendees, the record-high number in history, from regional steel producers and suppliers. Two keynotes were given by the CEO of Cleveland Cliffs Lourenco Goncalves, and Congressman Frank Mrvan. They emphasized the importance and the future of the steel industry for Northwest Indiana and the whole nation. The congressman Mrvan highlighted his recent visit to CIVS and wonderful partnership between CIVS and the steel industry.
The Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE) Chicago District Section was formed in 1915. The Iron and Steel Society (ISS) Midwest Coke, Iron & Steel Local Section was formed in 1976. In 2004, with the merger of AISE and ISS, AISE Chicago District Section and the ISS Midwest Coke, Iron & Steel District Section were combined to form the AIST Midwest Member Chapter. The Midwest Member Chapter is the largest AIST member chapter with more than 1,600 members and includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Northern Indiana, and a small portion of Northwestern Illinois. The chapter activities have provided PNW students with more opportunities to learn about the steel industry and gain practical knowledge through keynotes and networking.
