CIVS Develops Hazard Awareness Simulators with SDI

CIVS Senior Research Scientist, John Moreland; Research Engineer, Kyle Toth, and CIVS student, Luis Raygadas had multiple visits to Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) Butler facility in September, 2021 to capture 360-degree videos for a series of interactive hazard awareness simulators it is developing in collaboration with SDI safety personnel.

The simulators are using a method develop through the Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium (SMSVC), which uses specialized cameras and interactive software to virtually immerse personnel in hazardous areas, allowing them to recognize, learn about, and understand how to mitigate hazards before experiencing them in the field.
