Ph.D. Student, Yuchao Chen, Presented at TMS 2021 Virtual
CIVS Ph.D. Student, Yuchao Chen, presented his research titled “A study of numerical modeling of jet heating phenomenon in porous media” at the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) 2021 Virtual conference on March 15th, 2021. TMS is a professional association that connects minerals, metals, and materials scientists and engineers who work in industry, academia, and government positions around the world. TMS 2021 was hosted virtually this year, providing high-quality technical programming, live events, a virtual exhibit, networking activities, and more.
In the meeting, Yuchao gave an overview of the Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium’s (SMSVC) research work on the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and also demonstrated methodologies and examples of implementation for the EAF models. Yuchao introduced the CFD model developed to predict oxy-natural gas combustion in EAF operation with a detailed consideration of different chemical reaction mechanisms and radiation models. He also presented validation of the model for flow and flame properties and proposed general criteria for choosing chemical reaction mechanisms and radiation models for industrial applications. Participants showed high interest in the presented model and fully affirmed the research conducted by CIVS students.
